It's been pretty eventful around here. Over the past few weeks we've had a couple of special days (Mothers Day, Boys Day), a few birthday bashes (somehow Ryan Hilton always ends up having more than one), two visitors from out of town, a new job (for Rich), and a few long runs (for me). But once we get through the next few days, things should slow down. We were supposed to start slowing down this weekend, but not only will I be attempting to log a 22-miler...but we've also decided to take the two boys (& my parents) with us to the Hilton Waikoloa this 3-day weekend. Which means we'll spend about 14 hours per day breaking up arguments over who is faster/smarter/better at ___________, hear countless conversations about poop, and get about 3 hours of sleep. We also have a busy weekend next weekend with a few major projects up at our house (our real one). Once those are over, we can start to chill for a bit.
But come August...things will ramp up again, because guess who will be starting preschool? :-)
I've had mixed feelings about sending Ryan off to the rat race a year earlier than he needs to. I'm very anti-Asian in this way...not very concerned about academic milestones/testing, school rankings. I mean, I went to a very likely, low-ranked public school from K-12, and yet look how wildly successful I am! Not every 37-year old grows up to own a Corolla and live at home with her parents, and yet,
hot dog! I've done it! Take that haterz!!!
But the school we've selected offers a 4-day a week, half-day option...which makes it seem a lot more 'playdate-like' than rigorous/preparatory. So we're pretty sure that there will be no multiplication drills for the kiddies while kneeling on rice. We want to send Ryan to preschool primarily for the socialization that we think we needs, and secondarily- to help develop his admittedly, very weak (my bad) fine motor skills (writing the alphabet, drawing).
We really think/hope that adding this component to his world will make it complete. So the plan is that I'll continue to work on his reading/baking/swimming/playdates, Rich will continue to work on his physical skills (biking, scooter, playing with toys), my mom will continue to expose him to arts, crafts, music and dance, my dad will continue to show him how to operate loud yard machinery and sneak him daily Popsicles (then deny that he gave them even though Ryan is holding a sticky popsicle stick and has a purple tongue), and Keni & Riki will continue to play/argue/share with him. It takes a village, right? :-)
I'll leave you with a few pics from Ryan's Bubba Gump dinner family dinner celebration the other week...

| The gluttonous family tradition...sharing a giant serving of mud pie. Ryan did the obligatory spill of one piece on the floor so we could crawl around on smashed fries and a decade of grease to mop it up. Thanks, Ry! |
