Day 5 - Madrid's San Francisco el Grande & San Gimes Chocolate Churros!

We started our day with a trip to see the once monthly Changing of the Guard Ceremony. There was quite a long queue to get in, and the hour-long ceremony was ah...okay. I'd skip it unless you really like watching a bunch of uniformed men on horseback look like they're lost. Let's make a square shape! No, you know what? Let's make two circles. Oh crap, did I say circles? I meant a giant rectangle! Wait, we did that one earlier? No worries, let's just do it again! (You get the idea. Lots of ceremony and pomp. Not so big on things that really matter, like handing out churros to people in the crowd.)

Right next door to the ceremony was the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. While it may not have the worldwide name recognition of other chapels around the world (St. Peter's Basilica, Cathedral of Notre Dame), it did have some amazingly detailed artwork on the ceilings that I loved.

I have no idea if these were painted while laying on a scaffold (a la Sistine Chapel), but they were gorgeous.
After spending time at the church praying for Joey's soul, (fruitless) we headed back to (where else?) Mercado de San Miguel for some lunch!
Paella!
Hors deuvre starters!
Gelato!
Later that evening, we only had to cross the street from our hotel to go to the legendary San Gimes for Madrid's famous chocolate and churros.
I am neither a huge fan of chocolate or churros, but there's something about combining the two of them together that rocked my world. I spent the rest of our time in Madrid fighting the instinct to return for more.
Later that evening Joey and I went to cruise Plaza del Sol (the main square of Madrid, right near our hotel...where there appear to be nightly protests for one reason or another). I had hoped to watch some live freestyle flamenco dancing, but there was none (only more protests). No biggie, I danced for the people instead. (I must remember to share my gift of dance with the world.)
Art in its purest form.
Wayne & Janice caught in the naughty part of town...again. ;-)
