Stumbling

I know training plans have their ups and downs. Week #3 was definitely an 'off' week. I worked most of Tue and Th, and so I ended up skipping my speed work and gym workout. I also didn't exactly eat like an athlete in training (except of course, if that athlete was a sumo wrestler). However, a few things still went 'right' that I am very grateful for:
  • I'm still meeting/slightly exceeding my overall weekly goal miles (though it's a pretty low benchmark meant to be exceeded).
  • I managed to get some laundry, deep cleaning,  grocery shopping, and meal prepping done this weekend (something I haven't had much time for during the last two weeks). Veggie fried rice and chili are very exotic, time consuming delicacies to craft, I know. But I made them BOTH today. By myself.
  • I picked our second and third ever lilikoi (passion fruit), and the third one was a freakish bombucha! I am so ready for the next Giant Lilikoi contest. (What? There is no such contest? Then I win by default!)
  • I got another GIANT pile of new books from the library, and a second even larger pile of books from the library book sale. My nightstand makes me look a bit like a book hoarder at the moment, but I'm cool with that.
  • Saturday was a pretty epic 'Mom & Son win.' After three straight days of being confined at home due a bad cold, Ryan finally got to leave solitary. Because Rich had to work 12 hours that day (taxing on him, but much appreciated, rare OT), I had to start my 14-mile run at 4:30am with three run friends (but that went well, with minimal knee discomfort again). Once the run was checked off my list, we had the rest of the day to hit a super fun pool party (Ry's friend's birthday), and then a few hours later- we were at the annual fair!
Someone surprised me with a thoughtful gift from his birthday party pinata loot! (Although let's be real, if he hadn't forked them over...I probably just would have stolen them.) ;-)
  • And if Sat wasn't enough, on Sunday Rich took Ryan out for some father/son bonding. One of the goals Rich has each week is to plan a fun activity for two of them. Because he's been so busy with work, the theater and our renovation, this ensures they get some quality time together. Today they hit Ryan's favorite restaurant (Daiichi Ramen) and the arcade.
The joy country kids get to experience only once a year...the fair! (Last year's was the first cancelled in like, 30 years, due to a hurricane warning. Most families were sad, but relieved, I bet.) Because as much as maintaining equipment, shipping, liability coverage and staffing must cost- holy crikey! The prices get higher each year at ten times the rate of inflation, it seems. This year, if you wanted to gain admission, eat a simple meal, ride 8-10 rides and play 5-6 games, you EASILY needed about $150 per person! My heart truly ached for those families cruising around with 3-4 kids! I took what I thought was 'plenty' of cash and RAN OUT. I had to borrow some from my SIL. :-|
Super fun to report- the kids excitedly braved the terrifying Zipper and loved it!!! (I rode it for the first and last time in high school, and promptly puked upon exiting. I still give that ride dirty looks to this day. Jerk.)
  • I believe this week should be a lot more reasonable, and Lordy I'm hoping so! Mama needs a few good runs, and her new foam roller to arrive (because if you already have gray hair, inhale fiber supplements and wear reading glasses...the foam roller is apparently the next hot item the 40+ crowd needs).
I'm also glad Ry is healthy, Rich is feeling better, we were able to clean our dirty house for a few hours today, and a new week with less work on the docket is upon us! Tomorrow is picture taking day for my little guy, and more importantly, is Sep 11th, so I'm hoping to come up with an activity for Ry that honors the tragedy of that day with some good deeds and love.
